The Opportunity:

The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Washington State University (WSU) on the Pullman, Washington Campus invites applications from emerging scholars to join our community as a permanent, full-time, tenure-track faculty member in Electrical Engineering at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Although all areas of electrical engineering will be considered, research emphasis will be on power systems, including applications of machine learning and/or cybersecurity to power systems engineering.

The electric power engineering program at WSU ranks among the top five in the nation in faculty, student, and research expenditure. WSU’s power program consists of twelve faculty members in EECS and two staff who specialize in teaching and research in electric power engineering. The group includes a member of the National Academy of Engineering and four fellows of IEEE. This core group is complemented by over 20 affiliated faculty members from other departments across the university, together forming the multidisciplinary research center, Energy Systems Innovation Center (ESIC) (https://esic.wsu.edu/). ESIC has a long tradition of close collaboration with the regional power industry and is well-supported by two annual membership programs. The power program’s annual research expenditure is about $3M, with approximately 30 graduate students and multiple postdocs and visiting researchers. The WSU power faculty collaborates closely with the power industry, research institutions worldwide, and various government organizations.

Another strength of the WSU power program is the Advanced Grid Institute (AGI), which is a joint institute between WSU and the PNNL dedicated to modernizing the grid (https://natlab.wsu.edu/grid/). AGI is envisioned to be the leader in modeling and simulation of the power grid to enable advanced controls and operations for the resilient, sustainable power system of the future. WSU is also a member of the Power System Engineering Research Center (PSERC), which is a consortium of 12 leading universities and 27 industry partners.

About WSU, Pullman, VCEA, and EECS:

Washington State University is a land-grant, multiple-campus, Research 1 institution. This position will serve on the Pullman campus, which has an enrollment of around 20,000 students and is located in Southeastern Washington on the homelands of the Nimíipuu (Nez Perce) Tribe and Palus people. Located about 70 miles south of metropolitan Spokane, Pullman is also a quick drive away from the scenic Idaho panhandle and Moscow Mountain. The rolling hills of the Palouse offer a wide range of activities and a true four-season climate. The area provides ample opportunity to enjoy the cultural and academic hub of both Washington State University and the University of Idaho, in the neighboring town of Moscow, Idaho. Find more information about the region online at https://pullmanchamber.com.

The new faculty member will join 32 existing tenure-track faculty members and 18 career-track faculty members in the School of EECS, which has experienced rapid enrollment growth over the past five years. Around the fall of 2025, over 1,000 undergraduate students were enrolled in its B.S. programs, and 148 graduate students were enrolled in its M.S. and Ph.D. programs in computer science, cybersecurity, electrical engineering, and computer engineering. The School of EECS expects continued enrollment growth and anticipates multiple faculty hires over the next two years. The current faculty composition in the School of EECS includes a member of the National Academy of Engineering, over ten fellows of international professional societies, and eighteen CAREER and Young Investigator award recipients. Our faculty excel in both teaching and research, and we sustain multiple internationally recognized research programs in artificial intelligence/machine learning, electronic design automation and computer architecture, high-performance computing, data science, cybersecurity, software engineering, and power systems and engineering. Our graduate students have recently won multiple prestigious awards, including Microsoft Research fellowship, IBM Research fellowship, and NSF Computing Innovation fellowship.

Washington State University encourages all qualified candidates to apply, including members of the military and veterans, and persons with disabilities. WSU employs only U.S. citizens and lawfully authorized non-U.S. citizens. WSU acknowledges that its locations statewide are on the homelands of Native American peoples, who have lived in this region and have been caretakers of the land from time immemorial. The Morrill Act of 1862 established our land-grant institution by providing public and federal lands that are traced back to the disposition of Indigenous lands, often taken by coercive and violent acts, and the disregard of treaties. For that, we extend our deepest apologies. We owe our deepest gratitude to the Native peoples of this region and maintain our commitment towards reconciliation. And as a land-grant institution, WSU is deeply committed to the land-grant mission, its Memorandums of Understanding with Native tribes in the region, and a tradition of service to society. Read the full WSU land acknowledgement online https://wsu.edu/about/wsu-land-acknowledgement/.
