Software Engineer | Fullstack

Location: Hybrid — Washington, DC

Who We Are

LoVasco helps organizations deliver exceptional benefits and retirement programs to the people they employ, while also stewarding the financial well-being of individuals in and out of the workplace. We engage clients who genuinely prioritize their employees, and we give them the tools, education, and programs that help their people achieve financial security for themselves and their families. That's our "why," and it's what motivates us.

What We're Building, and Why

Engineering at LoVasco was born out of a simple desire: to solve our own problems. A business like ours can string together a dozen flexible, off-the-shelf tools to deliver its services—and for a long time, that's exactly what we did. A stack of subscriptions, a web of workarounds, software that "does everything" but nothing quite the way we want it.

We believe in purpose-built software. Opinionated design. Polished, thoughtful workflows that bring clarity to our teams, elevate what we're capable of, are a joy to use, and are genuinely powerful. At the end of the day, our goal is to deliver the best possible experience to our clients—and we believe that owning the software we use to deliver our services, and that our clients and their participants use to interact with us, is the best way to do it.

What we're building is platform that serves as an “operating system” for our consulting business. For our teams, it's where we manage and make sense of our data, sharpen the insights we deliver, and automate the "work around work" so our people can focus on how best to serve our clients. For our clients, it's a centralized place to engage with those insights, own their data, and measure the impact of their programs. For participants, it's an education experience and a set of tools that feel tailored to them, are genuinely useful, and help them get the most out of their benefits.

Our Tech Stack

We build with React and Next.js on the frontend, NestJS for our API, Prisma as our ORM, and PostgreSQL for our database, all hosted on AWS. We manage nearly all of our infrastructure with Terraform, and DevOps and CI/CD are first-class parts of how we work.

Experience with this exact stack is welcome, but it isn't a requirement. A strong foundation in modern web frameworks and databases, and the discipline to ship and operate software well, matters far more than any single tool—we can teach the specifics. What we're looking for is genuine technical competence and an people who love their craft.

Your Role

We're looking for fullstack engineers. You'll work across the entire stack, designing, building, and maintaining features end-to-end—from the database to the interface—and help own the infrastructure and deployment pipelines that keep our platform reliable.

Because projects here begin with open questions rather than finished specifications, you'll help shape what we build: translating user feedback into the right work, scoping projects, writing RFCs, documenting decisions, and taking part in our planning cycles.

The five key responsibilities for this role are:

Migrating a core consulting team onto our platform: modeling their data, rebuilding the workflows they rely on off their patchwork of legacy SaaS tools.
Building the CRM-style interfaces our teams live in every day: the data entry, organization, and record-keeping tools that keep client information accurate and usable.
Turning dense benefits and retirement data into clear, comparative reporting: client- and participant-facing views that make complex programs easy to understand and act on.
Contributing to our REST API: implementing business logic that is well-tested, performant, and built to last.
Standing up and hardening our infrastructure: Terraform-managed AWS, deployment pipelines, database strategy, and the security practices that keep sensitive client data safe.

Who You Are

A fullstack engineer with 1-3 years of experience. You may specialize, but if backend work doesn’t resonate with you or you would rather not touch design on the frontend, this is not the right fit. We want engineers who love the whole stack.
Design-minded. You believe it is not enough for software to merely work—it should look, feel, and function beautifully.
Product-minded. You never assume you know what users want; translating their needs into the right work is the heart of the job. This is, candidly, the hardest part of engineering. It takes patience, intuition, humility, and the confidence to be comfortable “not knowing” and the skills to "figure it out”.
A strong writer. Much of our work lives in documentation, RFCs, and clear explanations of what we've built and why.
A continuous learner. If reading documentation, taking a course, or digging into something unfamiliar sounds like a chore, this is not the place for you.
Energized by AI. You are eager to work with it, learn to wield it well, and figure out where it belongs in what we build.
Thrives in a culture of accountability and ownership. We run on a strong culture of accountability and ownership. You must have the confidence to speak candidly, disagree openly, own your work, and a genuine desire to grow.

Location

LoVasco is based in Detroit, Michigan, where most of our team works out of our downtown office most days. Engineering works out of a co-working space in Washington, DC. We're a hybrid team, and we believe that flexibility is supported and sustained by a strong culture of accountability and ownership.

Career Path

Engineering exists to help LoVasco grow. As software becomes a larger part of our growth strategy, engineers will take on more complex projects, grow and manage larger teams, and play a bigger role in the company's success. And as the firm wins, we want our engineers to win with it—the firm's success should be the engineer's success, too. Engineers grow by building products that make a real impact on the organization. That's our goal, that's our challenge, and that's what motivates us.

Benefits

We invest in our people, and our benefits reflect it:

Health coverage, through plans we sponsor, that are affordable and have excellent coverage options, including FSA and HSA.
A 401(k) with a 4% matching contribution, plus access to the same professionals and education resources our participants have—the tools to save, build financial security, and chart your future.
Performance-based bonus programs that supplement your compensation and reward both your individual performance and the company's profitability.
Flexible, hybrid work, with co-working subscriptions for employees outside the Detroit area.
Generous Paid Time Off, starting at 20 days per year, nine holidays, and Summer Fridays.
A learning budget for resources, continuous learning, and attending live conferences and conventions.
Biannual all-company meeting weeks in Detroit.
Life insurance, short and long term disability insurance, paid for by the company, including salary continuance.

Compensation: $85 - $100k; Competitive base salary, commensurate with experience, plus performance-based bonuses tied to your impact and the firm's success.
