Senior Software Engineer, Productivity

About Airwallex

Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 675,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own.

We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.

We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,300 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. About the team

Airwallex's Engineering Productivity team sits within the Infrastructure & Productivity division and is on a mission to turn everyday software engineers into superheroes on delivering frictionless engineering and excellent products. The team builds and maintains the internal platforms, tooling, and CI/CD infrastructure that power Airwallex's global engineering organization, serving hundreds of engineers across multiple offices and time zones. You will work alongside a collaborative, globally distributed team of engineers, SREs, and DevOps architects who are passionate about developer experience, automation, and engineering excellence. The team values proactive problem-solving, a customer mindset toward internal engineering teams, and continuous improvement of the tools and systems that accelerate product delivery. With a modern cloud-native tech stack and a culture that encourages innovation, this is an opportunity to shape how Airwallex engineers build, test, and ship software at scale.

The Role:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Productivity team, you will design, build, and optimize the developer tooling and infrastructure that enables Airwallex's engineering organization to move faster, ship with higher quality, and operate more efficiently. You will tackle complex challenges at the intersection of AI-driven automation, CI/CD pipeline engineering, and cloud infrastructure, working closely with engineering teams across the company to understand their pain points and deliver scalable solutions. Your work will directly influence engineering velocity, code quality, and deployment reliability across Airwallex's global platform. You will operate with a high degree of ownership, taking initiatives from ideation through production in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. This role is based in Seattle.

Responsibilities:

• Enhance developer productivity with AI: Utilize AI and machine learning to streamline developer workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and improve code quality across the engineering organization.

• Optimize CI/CD pipelines: Design, implement, and continuously enhance Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment pipelines to improve software delivery efficiency, reduce build times, and increase deployment frequency.

• Build and maintain internal developer platforms and tooling: Create scalable, reliable infrastructure services including messaging platforms, observability systems, and workflow automation tools that serve all engineering teams at Airwallex.

• Drive infrastructure reliability and operational excellence: Implement monitoring, alerting, and incident management practices to ensure platform health and minimize disruption to engineering workflows. Participate in on-call rotations and lead postmortems for P1/P2 incidents.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with domain engineering teams: Partner with engineers across Airwallex to identify productivity bottlenecks, gather requirements, and deliver tooling solutions that measurably improve the developer experience. Use data-driven metrics (e.g., build times, deployment frequency, developer satisfaction) to guide improvements.

• Uphold engineering quality standards: Write clean, well-tested code, conduct thorough code reviews, and contribute to the team's technical standards, documentation, and best practices. Champion quality gate enforcement (80% UT/IT coverage) and change management standards.

Minimum qualifications：

• Familiar with common design patterns, with experience in design and development of large-scale distributed, high concurrency, high load, high availability systems.

• Mastery of various common server technologies, which can optimize service response and data query, ensure various service quality, and solve the problems of high concurrency and high availability.

• Strong proficiency in backend programming languages such as Python, Java, Go, Kotlin, Rust, or Node.js and their corresponding frameworks.

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated experience building or maintaining CI/CD pipelines, developer tooling, or platform infrastructure at scale. Track record of technical leadership, architectural decision-making, and mentoring across teams.

• Infrastructure and cloud expertise: hands-on experience with cloud services (AWS, GCP, or Aliyun) and infrastructure management tools (Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker).

• Strong system design skills with the ability to define and own the technological strategy for a team or domain, making sound architectural decisions that balance performance, scalability, maintainability, and cost. Demonstrated ability to review RFCs and provide deep insights into best-of-class designs.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience leveraging AI/ML tools or LLM integration to enhance developer workflows, automate code review, or accelerate engineering productivity. Familiarity with AI-powered development tools (e.g., Cursor, Copilot) is a plus.

• Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, or ELK stack, and a track record of operating production infrastructure with strong incident response practices.

• Demonstrated ability to move fast and grow in dynamic, collaborative, and ambiguous environments, with experience successfully proposing new solutions across a landscape of diverse decision makers. This aligns with Airwallex's Operating Principles of "Move Fast with Conviction" and "Curious."

• Experience in a platform engineering or developer experience role at a technology or fintech company, with a data-driven approach to measuring and improving developer productivity (e.g., tracking build times, deployment frequency, or developer NPS).
