About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our engineering team in Toronto.

This role is ideal for a strong hands-on engineer who can not only build high-quality software, but also design scalable system architectures, solve complex engineering problems, and deeply leverage AI to improve software development productivity and quality.

Experience building brokerage, trading, securities, financial services, or other mission-critical backend systems is highly preferred.

The role will work closely with our engineering and product teams in Shenzhen, China, so strong cross-region and cross-cultural collaboration skills are important.

What You’ll Do

• Design, develop and maintain highly reliable and scalable backend systems.
• Own technical design and implementation of complex business and platform capabilities.
• Participate in system architecture design and make sound technical decisions considering scalability, reliability, maintainability, performance and security.
• Build systems supporting brokerage and financial-service use cases, such as account management, trading, order management, positions, settlement, funding, risk management and related backend services.
• Identify architectural and engineering bottlenecks and drive improvements to existing systems.
• Write clean, maintainable and well-tested production code.
• Conduct code reviews and contribute to strong engineering standards and best practices.
• Work closely with Product, Risk, Compliance, Operations and other engineering teams to translate complex business requirements into robust technical solutions.
• Collaborate closely with engineering and product teams based in Shenzhen headquarters, including technical design discussions, project delivery, system integration and issue resolution across regions.
• Communicate effectively across different time zones, teams and technical contexts.
• Take ownership of production issues and perform systematic root-cause analysis.
• Actively use AI-assisted software development tools and AI coding agents throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Explore and establish effective AI-native engineering practices, including AI-assisted coding, code review, debugging, testing, documentation, refactoring and technical research.
• Continuously improve engineering productivity while maintaining high standards for code quality, security and reliability.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong hands-on engineering capabilities.
• Strong backend software development experience in one or more major programming languages such as Java, C++, Go, Python or similar languages.
• Proven experience designing and building complex, distributed or highly available backend systems.
• Strong understanding of software architecture and the ability to independently design technical solutions for complex business problems.
• Solid knowledge of distributed systems, databases, APIs, messaging systems, caching, concurrency and system performance.
• Strong engineering fundamentals, including code quality, testing, observability, reliability and production troubleshooting.
• Ability to understand complex business domains and translate business requirements into scalable technical designs.
• Strong ownership mindset and the ability to independently drive projects from technical design through production deployment.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, especially in cross-functional and geographically distributed teams.
• Deep understanding and practical use of AI-assisted software development.
• Regular hands-on experience using AI coding tools or AI coding agents to improve development productivity.
• Ability to critically review, validate and improve AI-generated code rather than simply relying on generated outputs.
• Strong interest in exploring how AI is changing software engineering workflows and development methodologies.

Highly Preferred

• Experience developing backend systems for brokerage, securities, trading or capital markets businesses.
• Experience with systems such as:
• Order Management Systems (OMS)
• Trading systems
• Account and portfolio systems
• Position and P&L systems
• Clearing and settlement
• Cash and funding systems
• Risk management systems
• Market data systems
• Experience working in regulated financial environments.
• Experience designing high-volume, low-latency or mission-critical systems.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and modern DevOps practices.
• Experience leading technical design or acting as a technical owner for major projects.
• Experience collaborating with engineering teams in China or other global engineering organizations.
• Professional working proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is a significant plus, as it can greatly improve day-to-day collaboration with teams based in Shenzhen.

What Makes You Stand Out

You may be a particularly strong fit if:

• You enjoy writing code yourself, rather than moving entirely into project or people management.
• You naturally think about architecture, system boundaries and long-term maintainability when solving engineering problems.
• You have built systems where accuracy, reliability and risk control matter as much as development speed.
• You understand financial or securities businesses and can quickly connect business processes with underlying system architecture.
• You are comfortable collaborating directly with engineering teams across North America and China.
• You can communicate technical ideas clearly across different teams, cultures and time zones.
• You already consider AI an essential part of your daily engineering workflow.
• You actively experiment with AI coding agents and are interested in moving from traditional software development toward AI-native software engineering.
• You are comfortable challenging existing technical approaches and proposing simpler, more scalable solutions.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate is not simply an experienced developer.

We are looking for a hands-on senior engineer who combines strong software engineering fundamentals, solid architecture capabilities, financial-system experience, strong global collaboration skills and an AI-native engineering mindset.

You should be capable of independently taking a complex problem from:

Business Requirement → Technical Architecture → Implementation → Testing → Production → Continuous Improvement

while collaborating effectively with both the Toronto team and our Shenzhen headquarters, and using modern AI capabilities to make the engineering process faster, smarter and more effective.

Benefits

What We Offer

• Competitive salary, comprehensive benefits, and performance-based incentives
• Opportunities for professional growth in a fast-growing fintech company
• Beautiful office space in mid-town Toronto with stunning city views
• Work in a company that’s a global leader in online brokerage and wealth management
