Citi is looking for a Senior Java Developer to take technical ownership of business-critical Credit Risk and Capital Markets platforms, driving the modernization of large-scale systems into resilient, cloud-native architectures. In this Vice President-level role, you will operate as a senior individual contributor and technical leader — shaping engineering standards, guiding platform evolution, and delivering high-impact solutions across a globally distributed team. If you bring deep Java expertise, Capital Markets domain knowledge, and a drive to solve complex engineering challenges at scale, this role offers the scope and influence to make a real difference.
Responsibilities
- Design and deliver high-performance, enterprise-scale Credit Risk and Capital Markets systems across the full software development lifecycle, from architecture through production deployment.
- Lead the re-engineering of complex, monolithic applications into modern, cloud-native microservices, ensuring scalability, resilience, and regulatory compliance at every stage.
- Define and drive architectural decisions for platform modernization initiatives, including cloud migration and the adoption of distributed data processing technologies.
- Build and sustain low-latency, highly available systems that meet enterprise-grade standards for security, performance, and operational stability.
- Partner with a global team of software engineers, business analysts, DevOps, and support functions to deliver quality solutions across Capital Markets and Risk domains.
- Mentor and develop mid-level and junior engineers, raising engineering standards and enabling the team to consistently deliver production-grade solutions.
- Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies — including AI-assisted development tooling — to improve engineering efficiency and delivery quality.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 6+ years of experience in application development or systems analysis, with a track record of delivering large-scale, complex technology initiatives.
- Deep expertise in Core Java, including object-oriented design principles, concurrent and multi-threaded programming, JVM memory management, and performance tuning.
- Hands-on experience re-engineering monolithic applications into microservices architectures, and deploying containerised workloads using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Practical knowledge of distributed systems and data processing frameworks such as Apache Flink, alongside distributed caching technologies such as Redis, Oracle Coherence, or GridGain.
- Database experience spanning relational platforms (preferably Oracle) and NoSQL technologies (preferably MongoDB), with the ability to design for scale and reliability.
- Proven domain knowledge in Capital Markets, including Derivatives, Credit Risk, and Risk Management, with experience supporting risk-sensitive, business-critical platforms.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related STEM discipline, or equivalent practical experience in a comparable role.
Beneficial Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with SDLC and DevOps tooling including Git, Bitbucket, Jenkins, SonarQube, and JIRA, with familiarity in secure coding practices.
- Familiarity with Linux and Unix environments, including scripting for automation and operational tasks.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Devin to accelerate engineering delivery.
- Recognised subject matter expertise in one or more areas of application development, with a demonstrated ability to influence architectural and strategic decisions at a senior level.
What We Offer
At Citi, you will work at the intersection of technology and financial markets, contributing to platforms that directly support global Capital Markets operations. This is a senior role with real ownership, strategic influence, and the opportunity to shape how critical systems are built and modernised across a high-performing global engineering team.
- Hybrid working model with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, giving you flexibility alongside meaningful in-person collaboration.
- Opportunity to lead technically significant, franchise-critical initiatives with direct impact on Credit Risk and Capital Markets infrastructure at global scale.
- Access to continuous learning and professional development resources to deepen both technical and domain expertise.
- A performance-driven environment where senior engineers have genuine influence over architectural direction and technology strategy.
- Competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your financial wellbeing and long-term career growth.
- Wellbeing support and work-life balance initiatives, backed by programmes tailored to the needs of experienced technology professionals.
