Plant Efficiency Industrial Placement

Job Description

At EDF UK, Success is Personal. We don’t define it, you do. Join our Plant Efficiency Industrial Placement and achieve your career goals in the way you want to, all while supporting our journey to An Electric Britain.

"Electricity is such a vital component in everyone’s lives. It powers schools, businesses and hospitals, so I knew that if I did my placement within EDF then I would have a really large impact on society, and that made my placement a lot more fulfilling.” Priyanka, Science and Engineering Industrial Placement

The Opportunity

This 12-month placement offers a starting salary of £26,050 and the chance to work at one of our key nuclear sites. You’ll join the Operational Technical Support team at Heysham 1, where you’ll support daily operations and help improve plant performance.

You’ll gain practical experience in cooling systems, pump mechanics and problem-solving across plant-wide scenarios. This will involve a healthy mix of hands-on activities and theoretical modelling. This placement offers a unique opportunity to work with experienced engineers and develop a broad understanding of nuclear operations.

What You’ll Experience

During your Plant Efficiency Industrial Placement, you’ll work at #Heysham 1 within the Operational Technical Support department. Past students have worked on diagnosing plant-wide issues, supporting mechanical systems, and contributing to the safe and efficient running of the station.

This placement offers practical learning in a professional environment, supported by experienced teams and mentors. You’ll apply academic knowledge to real industry contexts while completing degree-relevant modules and gaining insight into plant operations within the energy sector.

Your Work Location

You’ll be based on site at #Heysham 1 Power Station, within the Operational Technical Support Department.

Who You Are

To be eligible for this EDF industrial placement, you need to be on track to achieve, or have already achieved, a bachelor’s degree (2:2 or higher) in a relevant field such as Mechanical or Chemical Engineering. Candidates from other disciplines with experience in mechanical comprehension or thermodynamics are also encouraged to apply.

It is a requirement that those who join us have the right to work in the UK. Whilst sponsorship may be a possibility, we reserve the right in our decisions to give priority to those who already have the right to work in the UK.

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.

Pay, Benefits and Culture

Alongside a starting salary of at least £26,050 per annum and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include customisable benefits such as electric vehicle leasing, discounted gym membership, life assurance, tech vouchers, experience days, and more.

At EDF, we believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we offer you the freedom to develop a career that’s unique to you. Here, Success is Personal – it’s your journey, powered by us.

Everyone is welcome at EDF; we’re committed to building a workforce that reflects gender balance, social mobility, and inclusion of minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, and those with disabilities.

As a Disability Confident employer, we're committed to creating an accessible recruitment process and encourage candidates to tell us about any support they may need. Should you disclose a disability and meet the minimum criteria (which will include holding a relevant degree discipline/grade and achieving the required pass mark for Stage 1 Testing) for the role you’ll be progressed to the first stage of the selection process. Some of our roles at EDF attract large volumes of applications. When this happens, we’ll apply the Disability Confident scheme’s guidance on taking practical and appropriate steps selecting disabled candidates who best meet the minimum criteria for the job.

Our Recruitment Process

We'll guide you through every stage and keep you updated along the way. You'll be supported by real people, with opportunities to ask questions, learn more and receive feedback where possible.

For our Early Careers Programmes, we use a combination of automated decision-making, assessment technology and human review.
