Environmental Safety Industrial Placement

Job Description

At EDF, Success is Personal. That means your journey is unique to you. Join our Environmental Safety Group Industrial Placement and you’ll gain hands-on experience, develop key skills, and help Britain achieve net zero – all while shaping a career that’s truly yours.

"Electricity is such a vital component in everyone’s lives. It powers schools, businesses and hospitals, so I knew that if I did my placement within EDF then I would have a really large impact on society, and that made my placement a lot more fulfilling.” Priyanka, Science and Engineering Industrial Placement.

The Opportunity

This 12-month placement offers a starting salary of £26,050 and the chance to work on site at one of our #Heysham 1 and 2 Power Stations.

You’ll launch your career in Environmental Safety with our customised training programme. Taking on a real job at a junior level, you'll gain invaluable hands-on experience while being mentored by highly skilled professionals.

You’ll help shape how we do Environmental Safety, learning the ropes and making a real impact. You’ll also gain experience in team working, problem solving, and using human performance tools, with opportunities to work on plant operations and explore other areas of interest.

What You’ll Experience

During your Environmental Safety Group Industrial Placement, you’ll gain in-depth experience within an Environmental Safety Group department at a nuclear power plant. You’ll be working with experienced environmental and radiological professionals to help us deliver our technical oversight and compliance activities.  You will have the opportunity to gain experience in applying your academic knowledge to real environmental protection and radiological safety challenges in the energy industry

Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to see how other departments within the power station function, expanding your understanding of the broader industry.

Past students have worked on projects improving waste management processes for non-radioactive waste, performed routine monitoring and prepared regulatory reports for sea water usage and oil accountancy, collected and managed data for UK Emissions trading scheme compliance, and supported calibration and quality control of lab equipment.

Your Work Location

You’ll be based on site at one of the #Heysham 1 and 2 Power Stations, within the Environmental Safety Group.

Who You Are

To be eligible for this scheme, you need to be on track to achieve, or have already achieved, a 2:2 undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Environmental Science, Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering.  This position is also suitable for candidates undertaking a year in industry as part of their degree programme, subject to your university requirements.

It is a requirement that those who join us have the right to work in the UK. Whilst sponsorship may be a possibility, we reserve the right in our decisions to give priority to those who already have the right to work in the UK.

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.

Pay, Benefits and Culture

Alongside a starting salary of at least £26,050 per annum and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include customisable benefits such as electric vehicle leasing, discounted gym membership, life assurance, tech vouchers, experience days, and more.

At EDF, we believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we offer you the freedom to develop a career that’s unique to you. Here, Success is Personal – it’s your journey, powered by us.

Some of our roles at EDF attract large volumes of applications. When this happens, we’ll apply the Disability Confident scheme’s guidance on taking practical and appropriate steps selecting disabled candidates who best meet the minimum criteria for the job.

Our Recruitment Process

We'll guide you through every stage and keep you updated along the way. You'll be supported by real people, with opportunities to ask questions, learn more and receive feedback where possible.

For our Early Careers Programmes, we use a combination of automated decision-making, assessment technology and human review.
