Engineering Manager

Mark43 is a public safety technology company trusted by over 200 police forces worldwide. We build AWS cloud-native software that police forces and emergency services rely on in their most critical moments, from managing custody records to dispatching officers in the field.

We're part of a 400-person global company, but the UK team operates with startup energy: small enough that your work is visible, big enough that you're backed by serious investment.

What You'll Do

We are seeking an Engineering Manager who will serve as a strategic leader able to solve complex technical challenges. This is a hybrid role requiring at least three days per week in our Manchester office to support strong team collaboration.

• Work closely with leadership to set longer term strategic direction for your team and our product suite
• Serve as a technical project manager for your team: scheduling, release planning, managing backlog, and removing roadblocks that may arise
• Coordinate and collaborate with US and UK teams to ensure alignment with technology and business goals
• Mentor engineers through technical coaching, pairing, feedback, and thoughtful delegation, helping them grow their judgement and take on increasingly complex ownership
• Manage and support the engineers on the team through regular 1:1s, clear expectations, feedback, career development, and a healthy, inclusive team environment

What You'll Need

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience designing and operating frontend and backend services, distributed systems, and system integrations
• Demonstrated technical leadership on complex engineering projects, including architecture, design reviews, implementation strategy, and mentoring other engineers
• Experience leading engineers through a mix of technical direction, coaching, project leadership, and people management, with the judgement to know when to guide, delegate, or step in directly
• A solid track record of delivering projects and collaborating with leaders across the organization: including Engineering, Product, Design, and Operations
• Experience as a software engineer and up to date knowledge of modern software languages, frameworks, and developer tools, including Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, React, SQL/MySQL, and cloud-native systems

Nice to Have

• Prior experience in public safety, government software, or regulated domains.

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, observability tooling, and cloud-native practices.

What We Offer

• 28 days holiday plus UK bank holidays

• Private medical, dental, and vision insurance through AXA Health and BUPA, fully paid for you and your dependents

• 18 weeks paid parental leave for primary caregivers plus a ramp-back programme

• Income protection (75% of salary) and death in service cover (4x salary), fully paid

• Pension through Nest with 3% employer contribution

• Gym reimbursement for you and your partner

• Equipment allowance to set up your home office

• AI tooling including Claude Code Enterprise licences

• Spring Health membership with therapy sessions and mental wellness tools, fully covered

• Company performance-based bonus

• Paid sabbatical of one month at your five-year anniversary

• Biannual hackathons, learning budget, and a team that genuinely invests in your growth

What We Value

• Humility. You know the best ideas win, no matter where they come from. You ask questions before making assumptions and you're as happy being wrong as being right, because either way, the team gets to a better answer.

• Inclusivity. You respect expertise in all its forms and actively seek out perspectives different from your own. You make space for others and assume good intent.

• Excellence. You care deeply about technical quality in the systems you build, the designs you review, and the decisions you make. You set a high bar, lead by example, and help engineers develop the judgement to meet it independently.

• Diligence. You take ownership, mind the details, and understand that the software this team builds is used in moments that genuinely matter. You stay close to the technical details, surface risks early, and make sure the team delivers responsibly without cutting corners.
